February Break Skating Party Pictures

Were you vacationing in a hot climate last week?  Or maybe you were watching the Canadian women's hockey team win gold at the Olympics?  Check out the pictures below from our fun skating adventure.  Happily no one fell!  Maybe I will work up the courage to make more than two loops around the rink for our next skating party in March.

HGSC at the 25th Annual Saskatoon Heritage Festival

On February 2, 2014 the HGSC joined over forty exhibitors at the Saskatoon Heritage Festival at the Western Development Museum.   Approximately 2000 people visited the festival and History Graduate Students had the opportunity to discuss our research with more than 150 individuals.  This was a chance to showcases the work that is being done by our grad students, network, and develop research connections.

We were also able to publicise the upcoming De Brou Lecture on March 4th at the Frances Morrison Library.

"Facing Eugenics: Reproduction, Sterilization, and the Politics of Choice"

Dr. Erika Dyck will explore the history of Alberta's eugenics program - the largest of its kind in Canada - and will consider its origins and legacy.  2,822 people underwent sexual sterilizations in Alberta between 1929 and 1972, at a time when all birth control was illegal for healthy people.  How did men and women who came face-to-face with the eugenics program resist, accept, or ultimately fight against a program designed to control a population?
